COLUMBIA, S.C. — If you’ve ever driven through a work zone and felt unsure about what a sign meant, you’re not alone. Even people who have lived in the same area for years say they can get turned around when traffic patterns change.

Clint Gaston, a Columbia resident, says he still gets confused in certain spots in places he’s driven for years. “I still have to use my GPS to get around town, which is wild because I should know these streets,” Gaston said.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation says that’s why their crews work hard to make signs as clear as possible, especially in work zones.

The department said in a Thursday, Aug 7 statement that they "takes steps to avoid and reduce overlapping signs during both the design and construction phases of a project."
