COLUMBUS, Ohio — Central Ohio residents are being targeted by a jury duty scam involving impersonators claiming to be Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputies.

Erika Karl, a Powell resident, became the latest victim to nearly fall for the elaborate scheme Thursday afternoon when she received multiple calls from a blocked number. When she finally answered, she said a recording stated, "This call is being monitored and recorded.”

The caller, identifying himself as a sheriff's deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, informed Karl that she had missed jury duty that morning and was now in contempt of court.

"Immediately I said, ‘Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry I did not receive this summons. What can I do to correct this?’" Karl said.
