PHOENIX — A Phoenix group home caught fire Thursday night as patients were getting ready for bed.

The Phoenix Fire Department said the home, located near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, caught fire just before 10 p.m. They believe it started in the carport and quickly spread to the home.

Stacy Sutton, the regional director for Tungland who oversees the group home, said the patients were adults with cognitive disabilities who need assistance with daily living. They heard what sounded like snaps coming from outside and, when they looked out the window, saw flames.

"It's scary," Sutton said.

Caregivers for the patients immediately started evacuation efforts, Sutton said, knowing what to do because the workers train for situations like this.
