Best-selling author and podcast host Mel Robbins recently shared strategies to help families manage phone addiction. She partnered with Verizon for an event in New York City, where she discussed achieving a balance between phone use and family life, drawing from her own experiences.
In an interview at the event, Robbins emphasized the importance of adults addressing their own phone habits before guiding their children. "We want to blame our kids. We want to complain about teenagers," she said. "But you got to look in the mirror."
Robbins highlighted that while phones can serve as valuable tools for connection and productivity, establishing boundaries at home is essential. She stated, "Your attention and your time is your most valuable resource, and it's your kids' most valuable resource."
She pointed out that when parents frequently check their phones, children may perceive that devices take precedence over family interactions. To counter this, Robbins suggested creating phone-free moments during everyday activities, such as waiting in line at stores. She also recommended designating a specific charging station for phones instead of carrying them around. Furthermore, she advocated for making dinner time a completely phone-free zone for all family members.
Robbins also addressed the impact of nighttime phone use on sleep quality. "Never, ever, ever sleep with your phone," she warned, noting that it can disrupt sleep, which is vital for both physical and mental health. She advised parents to have their children leave phones downstairs at bedtime.
For parents who need to use their phones for work-related tasks, Robbins encouraged transparency with their children. She suggested informing kids about the need to check emails or complete tasks, specifying how long it will take, and then putting the phone away afterward to reinforce the importance of family time.
