(CNN) - A hunter from the United States was killed by a buffalo he was tracking during an expedition in South Africa.

Asher Watkins was killed on Sunday in what was called a “sudden and unprovoked attack.”

Coenraad Vermaak Safaris, the company that organized the trip, says Watkins was visiting South Africa from Texas.

He was taking part in safari-style hunting, which involves driving around areas in an open-top truck in search of game.

After a target animal is spotted, hunters follow them on foot before taking a shot.

The company says it won’t be offering further details on how Watkins died.

Safari groups say buffaloes are regarded as the most dangerous animals to trail in Africa.
