SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane County Sheriff's Office sergeant was killed Saturday morning while responding to a traffic hazard on Interstate 90.

"It is with great sadness and the heaviest of hearts that the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office confirms the line-of-duty loss of Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Kenneth Salas, a member of our agency and law enforcement family,' the office stated.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Salas was hit by a vehicle on Aug. 9 around 7:40 a.m., while assisting with a large traffic hazard near the Four Lakes exit, on eastbound I-90.

The office said Salas was 59 years old and had served in law enforcement for 34 years, beginning his career as a Spokane County corrections officer before joining the sheriff's office as a patrol
