ON THIS DAY IN 1908 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Tonight is the night for the stars to fall. According to astronomical schedule they should come tumbling out of the sky at a tremendous rate, making brilliant illuminations in the heavens and perhaps scattering a few star fragments over New York City. August 10 ushers in the short shooting star season. Usually the season runs from the tenth to the fifteenth of the month, but last year it lasted longer, and as late as August 19 a big meteor fell at Amagansett, L.I., doing lots of damage. The meteor aroused a tide that swept away part of a bathing pavilion, undermined other small buildings and killed thousands of fish.”
