The four-man battle for champion jockey at Assiniboia Downs is now a three-man race.
On Tuesday, defending champion Prayven Badrie was thrown from his mount during a morning training session and suffered a broken hip. He underwent surgery on Thursday at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg and will miss the rest of the season.
Assistant director of racing Kirt Contois said Badrie was galloping a horse when it acted up. He reportedly dropped one of his lines, which the horse stepped on, stopping abruptly and catapulting him to the ground. Badrie’s wife has told ASD officials he is in good spirits, plans to return to Trinidad for recovery, and is eager to swim in the ocean as part of his rehab before making a comeback next year.
