CHARLES TOWN – A group of around a dozen volunteers from this year’s Leadership Jefferson class came together on Saturday to assemble over 700 emergency response kits for schools across the county.
The idea, coming from Leadership Jefferson’s sponsored teacher of the year, Katie Madrid, focused on getting the kits together to update old supplies, filling bags with things like tourniquets, scissors and other first-aid supplies to prepare for an emergency and possibly even deter one from happening in the first place.
“If the community is aware that we're prepared in that kind of an event, it actually acts as a deterrent as well, because if the community hears, hey, they're ready, if ever this were to happen, they're a lot less likely to go and act out in that way if there was an event,” sa
