MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Fire Department responded to multiple reports of blown manhole covers and black smoke coming from underground Sunday afternoon. As of 7 p.m., an MFD spokesperson confirmed the fire was put out.
The fire department and Madison Gas and Electric have established a safety perimeter around the area of West Washington to West Mifflin Street and Henry Street to Broom Street.
Residents in the areas between West Washington Avenue & Langdon Street and Broom & Fairchild Streets were expected to be affected by power outages as crews work to address the emergency. Power was set to return soon after 7 p.m.
