U.S.-based chipmakers Nvidia and AMD have agreed to pay the United States 15 percent of their revenue from sales of artificial intelligence chips in China, a highly unusual arrangement that some experts warn may be unconstitutional.
Under the financial agreement, the companies will give the U.S. government a portion of their sales as a prerequisite to obtaining export licenses for China, according to three people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the matter in public.
Nvidia issued a statement after the Financial Times first reported the arrangement Sunday.
