WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Waco, Texas is offering free jiu-jitsu classes to all law enforcement and first responders on Sundays.

The gym instructors hope law enforcement can learn new ways to deescalate situation in the field to reduce unnecessary injuries.

“We just want to make sure they have the tools to safely and effectively, not only defend themselves, but protect the person they’re restraining from injury,” Assistant instructor Braxton Ramos said.

Ramos hopes law enforcement can avoid dangerous encounters by using jiu-jitsu.

“On-duty weapon discharges are much lower in departments that have a jiu-jitsu program going on,” Ramos said. “Officer injuries are much lower in departments that have jiu-jitsu programs.”
