HENDERSON, KY. (WFIE) - Sunday was the biggest day of the Ellis Park summer meet: Ellis Park Derby Day! Six big stakes races, including the $200,000 Groupie Doll Stakes. This race goes a mile, on the dirt, for fillies and mares, 3 years old and up. It’s named for the famous mare, Groupie Doll, who won 12 races, including two at Ellis.

As they break, it’s the 3, “Harbor Springs” who jumps out to the front, along with the 7, “Taxed”. Those two keep the advantage, for the first three-quarter miles, but then things begin to change.

The closers begin to make their move. The 1, ‘Alpine Princess’, the 5, ‘Regaled’, and the 8, ‘Impel’ all come running.

‘Impel’ has the lead here, but ‘Regaled’ is really flying late; however, ‘Impel’ is able to hang on, to win by a head. What a finish!
