More than a month after a crash killed three people, the only survivor of the wreck is still recovering at Mission Hospital in Asheville, but he is slowly making progress.

On the evening of Monday, June 30, at around 7:40 p.m. two vehicles hit head-on on U.S. Highway 221 South in McDowell County, near the Rutherford County line.

The wreck happened when one car tried to pass several other cars, according to a previous story by The McDowell News.

A 2025 Honda Pilot was going south. The Honda went into the northbound lane to try to pass several vehicles, highway patrol said. The Honda hit a 2025 Toyota GR86 that was driving north.
