KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Aug. 11 marks National 811 Day, and to recognize it, KUB is reminding people to make the call before they dig on their property.

The hotline flags utility workers, sending them to potential do-it-yourselfers to mark out where they need to avoid digging. It helps make digger safer and, in Tennessee, the call is required by law.

“Tennessee State Law requires anyone preparing to dig, excavate, demolish property, or conduct any activity that could damage underground utility lines to notify Tennessee One Call (811) of their intent to dig at least three business days before the work begins,” KUB said.

KUB reports getting around 10 calls per week from customers who hit an underground line while digging. Calling 811 can avoid the hassle all together.
