PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)– Monday marks a holiday that Rhode Island, alone amongst all 50 states, recognizes as official- Victory Day, also commonly referred to as Victory over Japan Day or V-J Day.

First celebrated in 1948, the holiday celebrates the end of World War II, and is celebrated on the second Monday of August each month.

As it is a statewide holiday, state offices will be closed, though the only federal building that will be closed is U.S. District Court, and trash collection will be pushed back a day.

RIPTA will also be running buses on a Sunday schedule, and all of their offices besides the customer service kiosk in Newport will be closed.

A Victory Day celebration is set to be held in Pawtucket at Memorial Park at 11 a.m.
