1. St. Louis sheriff spent office cash on patches, photos — and a defense attorney

Recently released bank statements and other records are beginning to fill in the gaps in what's known about a spending spree in the city's sheriff's office.

In May, the office signed off on:

An $11,700 payment for new uniform patches for its deputies.

A $380 flag for the department.

Another $5,000 to retain an attorney specializing in federal criminal defense (amid Sheriff Alfred Montgomery facing questions over his spending and behavior).

$2,000 to a photographer

These are in addition to the more well-known purchases of golf carts, a new Tahoe and gold-plated badges.
