On Monday at 1:52 p.m. an extreme heat warning was issued by the National Weather Service in effect until Tuesday at 10 p.m. for John Day Basin, Foothills of the Southern Blue Mountains of Oregon, North Central Oregon and Central Oregon.

The weather service states, "Dangerously hot conditions with temperatures of 99 to 102 degrees expected. This will pose a moderate to locally major risk of heat-related illness."

"Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events," explains the weather service.

Find cool shelter: Stay in an air-conditioned room.

Avoid sun exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure, protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors
