Summer is officially over for students in the nation’s sixth-largest school district.

Broward County Public Schools opened its gates Monday, and the superintendent said there were no issues to report and that it was a smooth first day of school.

“I’m gonna say it’s awesome, it’s great, what else am I gonna say? It’s all positive, a day like today,” said Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “Thank the team for how they prepared, it takes a lot of preparation during the summer to have an awesome opening like this for all of our schools.”

We followed Hepburn as he visited several schools, beginning with Coconut Creek High School at 6 a.m., where he addressed the staff and students who arrived early for free breakfast, and took a turn serving the kids in the cafeteria line.
