NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - School starts Tuesday in Nelson County, and as always, safety is a priority.
Monday, deputies met with teachers to go over active shooter protocols, safety plans, and the new ZeroEyes AI system before the first bell rings.
When students step back into Nelson County classrooms, law enforcement says it will be walking into some of the most secure schools in the region.
“I take it very seriously for the fact that I have kids in the school. And I don’t want anything to happen to them,” said Curtis Brandon, Lieutenant of School Resource Officers for Nelson County Public Schools .
Last year, the district installed walk-through metal detectors at every entrance. This year, they’ve added a new layer of protection, an AI-based program called ZeroEyes.
