HANNIBAL (WGEM) - With the start of the school year, the streets will be a little busier before and after school as students walk, bike, or ride the bus.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has reminders for drivers who will be going through school zones.
“If you pick up your phone and look at a text, you’re more than twice as likely to get into a crash,” said Keith Killen, MoDOT Northeast District’s assistant district engineer.
Killen advises kids walking or biking to school to avoid wearing headphones.
“So they’re able to hear what’s going on around them, [such as] a car honking,” Killen said.
Hannibal Public School’s Transportation Director Scott Speer said this is especially true now as they gradually transition from diesel fuel to propane.
