FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) - Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will kick off a new school year on Wednesday.

District leaders, however, are working behind the scenes to chip away at a multi-million dollar budget deficit.

It owes less to the state than originally thought, clocking in at $11.3 million instead of what was estimated to be between $13 and $18 million.

Interim Superintendent Catty Moore said the reduction is due to the state withholding money the past few months from the district based on the shortfall.

It’s the first bit of good news in weeks, and Moore is hoping for more.
