President Donald Trump lashed out Tuesday at Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon over his continued criticism of the president’s tariff policy, telling the CEO he ‘ought to just focus on being a DJ.”
“I think that David should go out and get himself a new economist or, maybe, he ought to just focus on being a DJ, and not bother running a major financial institution,” Trump wrote Tuesday in an online post on his social media platform Truth Social.
Solomon has performed as a disc jockey for years under the stage name “D-Sol,” long before he was named Goldman Sachs CEO, though he reportedly hung up the headphones in late 2023 amid growing concern from Goldman Sachs board members.
Beyond spinning records, however, Solomon has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s tariff policy, and has warned that increased tariff rates would hurt the United States economy and force CEOs to “tighten their belts.”
Having gone into effect last week, Trump’s tariff policy saw tariff rates on nations across the globe increase significantly, and vary wildly from as low as 10% to as high as 50%. In less than a week, Trump’s tariff policy has unleashed turmoil in some markets, backlash from some countries, and increases to some prices.
However, Trump decried critics of his tariff policy, asserting, without evidence, that its impact was not felt by American consumers.
“It has been proven that even at this late stage, tariffs have not caused inflation or any other problems for America, other than massive amounts of cash pouring into our Treasury’s coffers,” he wrote.
“Also, it has been shown that, for the most part, consumers aren’t even paying these tariffs – it is mostly companies and governments, many of them foreign, picking up the tabs. But David Solomon and Goldman Sachs refuse to give credit where credit is due. They made a bad prediction a long time ago on both the market repercussions and the tariffs themselves, and they were wrong, just like they are wrong about so much else.”
