WEST CITY, Ill. (WSIL) -- The West City Police Department and the Franklin County Housing Authority honored two citizens on Tuesday for acts of bravery during an apartment fire on May 9, 2025.

Kenny Benedict and John Nalley received outstanding citizen awards for their heroic actions during a fire in the 300 Block of South Browning Street. The fire, which began as an electrical issue on the first floor, quickly spread to the second floor where a resident and her 2-year-old child were sleeping.

Benedict and Nalley heard smoke alarms and the resident's cries for help. Together with West City Police Officer James Pritchard, they helped rescue the mother and child from a second-story window. Both victims were treated for smoke inhalation at Franklin Hospital and later released.
