One of Oakland’s neighborhoods that gets the most foot traffic is on track to receive substantial upgrades to make walking there safer.
The Chinatown Complete Streets plan, in development for two years at the Oakland Department of Transportation, is now ready for the next step: looking for funding and assigning a designer.
A “complete streets” plan is a transportation engineering term for a plan that includes safety interventions for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.
At a meeting of the department’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee last month, engineer Manuel Corona, who is leading the project, said that the conversations OakDOT staff have had with residents and businesses in the area have helped them pare down a variety of street safety ideas into something viable.
