JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Wearing a mask in the commission of a crime could net a hefty fine from the city of Jackson.

On Tuesday, the Jackson City Council approved an ordinance banning people from wearing masks in outdoor public spaces, including along public sidewalks, roads, and alleyways.

The ordinance was approved on a 7-0 vote and is expected to go into effect immediately upon its passage.

The vote comes nearly a month after Interim Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade proposed the idea, saying he’s personally seen males riding bikes on with no shirt on, while wearing masks.

“It’s terrifying when you’re inside of a business and somebody walks in with a ... mask on,” said Wade.
