LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Wednesday marks the first day back for Fayette County Public Schools, and with young student drivers and school buses hitting the roadways, Lexington drivers are encouraged to remain extra cautious when headed out the door.

The Kentucky Department of Education reports that each school day, 8,795 buses are transporting more than 385,000 students statewide.

Sergeant Bige Towery with the Lexington Police Department says there will be longer lines at schools for the first few days, maybe the first few weeks, so drivers should be patient.
