BURTON, Ohio – As the Great Geauga County Fair prepares to open later this month, organizers say they’re stepping up safety measures and working closely with law enforcement following recent shootings at other Northeast Ohio fairs.

Geauga County Sheriff Scott A. Hildenbrand said his office has already met with the fair board’s safety committee to prepare for potential problems.

“We’ve always had a good presence at the fair,” he said. “We typically will meet with the fair board safety committee … and look at the trends that are occurring at other county fairs and what to expect — and maybe not even expect.”

One tool in that preparation is the Northeast Ohio Regional Fusion Center, which monitors social media for possible threats and alerts law enforcement.
