SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Sioux Falls City Council passed the proposed dwelling ordinance with the addition of amendments, in a unanimous vote, to address homelessness in public spaces.

Council Chair Rich Merkouris said the latest amendments focus on a humane approach, requiring service providers to be contacted before a violation is issued, giving 24 hours’ notice before removing unoccupied dwellings, and providing short-term storage for personal belongings.

Now, with these amendments being passed, the ordinance must have a third reading and a vote for final adoption with those proposed amendments.

That will happen at the next City Council meeting on August 19.
