SUMMERFIELD, N.C. — Just hours after Tim Sessoms resigned as mayor of Summerfield , the town council appointed Lee Haywood to the position on Tuesday. Haywood was the only candidate on the ballot for the upcoming mayoral election.

Sessoms shared a statement with WFMY News 2 regarding his resignation.

Part of his statement reads, “Rather than remain in this position for the next three months under these circumstances, I’ve chosen to step down today ... I will continue to attend community events, school programs, and local gatherings - because you don’t have to be mayor to show up and be supportive.”

Sessoms said he spoke with Haywood after making his decision, wishing him well and offering assistance.
