The owner of a Massachusetts commercial and residential roofing business was sentenced to a year and a day in prison in federal court on Tuesday for hiding $1.6 million in income from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the state U.S. Attorney’s office announced.
Natick resident Jake Miller, 42, of Natick, previously pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion in February, the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a press release .
Miller owned and operated Kostas Roofing, conducting business under the alias “Paul Kostas” rather than under his own name, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. Between 2013 and 2021, he cashed his customers’ checks and deposited the proceeds into his personal bank accounts, but flew under the radar of the IRS due to the name discrepancy.
