WATERVILLE, Maine (WMTW) - Police in Waterville say a gray fox recently tested positive for rabies and came from the Quarry Road trail.

Officials were first notified after the Maine CDC sent a letter about the infected animal to the Waterville Town Manager on Tuesday. The Maine CDC asked town officials to distribute information to educate residents on rabies prevention.

The rabies virus is spread when an infected animal bites or scratches a person. It is almost always deadly once symptoms manifest, but deaths in humans are rare in the U.S. thanks to robust prevention methods.

If a person is bitten by a rabid animal and is able to get to the hospital for vaccine shots before symptoms appear, which is typically one to three months from exposure, the virus is 100% treatable.
