Investing for the future is necessary, but potentially confusing. In the wake of an alleged Ponzi scheme perpetrated by a local company, it could also be scary.

But hiding money under the mattress isn’t the best way to plan for the future. So while predators get better at separating people from their money, consumers need to get more savvy.

Most scams have red flags hiding in plain sight – a person just needs to know where to look.

The Newnan Times-Herald will host local and state financial leaders on Aug. 27 who will tell residents how to spot those red flags and how to recognize a legitimate investment. This free event will be at the Asa Powell Expo Center, 197 Temple Avenue in Newnan at 1 p.m.

Newnan Mayor Keith Brady is scheduled to open the discussion.
