CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The peak of hurricane season is a month away and the tropics are starting to get active, especially in the Atlantic.

August and September are known to be active when it comes to hurricane season, and the peak of hurricane season is a month away, usually occurring around September 12th. When it comes to tropical development, currently, Tropical Storm Erin has formed in the Atlantic Ocean.

Erin is expected to continue moving west and strengthening to a Category 3 hurricane by the weekend into early next week, north of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. After that, Erin is expected to move to the north and from there it is still uncertain how close it will be to the East Coast, but one thing is for sure is there will likely be strong rip currents and large wave
