LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (KCTV) - The Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office says an Atchison woman will soon face sentencing for a child endangerment conviction.

On August 12, Liberti N. Figueroa, 24, of Atchison, was found guilty of two counts of aggravated endangering of a child. She was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter.

Her conviction comes two years after a one-year-old died in her care.

According to the prosecution, paramedics were first called to a Leavenworth apartment on Sept. 20, 2023, after an ashtray tipped over onto the young child, causing burns.

Then, on Oct. 18, 2023, paramedics returned to reports that a child was not breathing. The same 1-year-old child was taken to a Leavenworth hospital and died that evening.
