KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) - Students flocked to Union Grove Middle School on Wednesday, ready to get the new year started.
This year, students and staff are taking up new security procedures.
All middle and high school students as well as campus visitors will go through security detection systems upon arrival. Elementary schools will begin this procedure mid-semester.
This comes after the district investigated a deadly stabbing that occurred in March at Roy J. Smith Middle School between two female students, killing 14-year-old Serenity Baker.
The statewide cell phone policy is new for many districts, expect Killeen, who last year implemented the use of pouches for students to place their phone inside during school hours.
