BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- They parked at night near an alley, ready to sell two bags of marijuana to someone they'd been messaging through Instagram.

The transaction didn't go as planned.

Within minutes, the driver was shot and his passenger spattered with blood, the car careening out of control and hitting parked vehicles before slamming into a carport.

The shooter bolted.

Officers arrived to find Landen O’Ryan Worthy, 19, motionless in the driver's seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reports say his accused killer, Marlow Keith Maize, 18, was identified through a combination of surveillance video, cellphone data and a palm print left on Worthy's car.

Maize, charged with first-degree murder and held without bail, has a preliminary hearing scheduled this week.
