WATERFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - A deer has tested positive for rabies in Waterford.

The deer was found on Gun Shot Road and tested positive for rabies on August 12, according to Jennifer Muggeo, Director of Health.

“Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that can infect all warm-blooded animals, including people. It is spread mostly by wild animals, but unvaccinated cats and dogs may also become infected and spread the virus,” Muggeo said.

Some tips to protect yourself and your pets include avoiding feeding or approaching stray animals, keeping your pets up to date on their rabies vaccines, and limiting your pets unsupervised time outside.
