A view from the south end zone shows the new turf and bowl shape to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium as the football team practices on Aug. 1, 2025.

It is currently something of a golden age for Kansas Jayhawks football.

While KU backslid to a disappointing 5-7 a year ago, the program has won 20 games over the last three seasons under coach Lance Leipold, with the headliner being a 9-4 finish in 2023. The Jayhawks had previously won only 20 games over the 11 seasons that preceded their rise under Leipold in 2022, and their last nine-win season before Leipold's arrival came in 2007.

Now, Kansas has seen what could be a game-changing investment for its football program. As was first reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel and Max Olson, the school has received a $300 million gift from top booster David Booth. The co-founder of investment firm Dimensional Fund Advisors, Booth previously donated $50 million in 2017 to help renovate Kansas' stadium, which now bears his name.

The gift is the largest in school history and is believed to be one of the largest single gifts in college sports history, overall.

After playing the 2024 season in Kansas City and other venues, Kansas will debut a newly renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Week 0 against Fresno State. According to Olson, the school will use $75 million of Booth's gift to begin Phase 2 of its renovation project, which will include the renovation of the stadium's east side following the 2025 season.

The remainder of the gift will reportedly be used to "establish an annual additional revenue stream for Kansas athletics," which likely means more revenue-sharing funds for athletes now that we're in a post-House settlement world.

Despite its historic reputation as a basketball school, the Jayhawks seem to be serious about investing in their long-neglected football program. One of the largest donor gifts in the history of the sport will certainly help sustain those efforts for the foreseeable future.
