CARMEL, Ind. — First responders in Carmel are bringing attention to what they describe as a "noticeable uptick" in emergency calls involving children.

"Especially first thing in the morning, we are seeing runs where we get called out for anxiety, jitters, high heart rate," said Tim Griffin with the Carmel Fire Department.

The culprit? Too much caffeine and powerful energy drinks, according to Griffin.

"A lot of times, just through talking to (the student), we find out they've taken several hundred milligrams of caffeine," he said.

Oftentimes, students consume caffeine on an empty stomach before school. Griffin said they wind up in the nurse's office looking for help.
