BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A firefighter was hospitalized after helping put out one of two fires that sparked in Battle Creek early Wednesday.

It happened just after 5:30 a.m. at an abandoned home on Highway Street between Post and Kingman avenues, according to the Battle Creek Fire Department. Arriving crews found fire on the second floor and hoarding conditions on the first floor. No one was in the home. While working to put out the flames, one firefighter had minor burns, a sprained ankle and suffered from heat exhaustion. That firefighter was hospitalized, treated and released.

The fire was under control within 20 minutes and only the second floor was damaged.
