COLUMBUS, Ohio — In 2022, 57% of the fatal crashes investigated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol involved impaired drivers — a staggering statistic that helped launch a program aimed at preventing repeat offenses before another tragedy strikes.
The initiative, called Operation New Beginnings, is a collaborative effort between OSHP and behavioral health boards across the state. The goal: reach drivers arrested for impaired driving and connect them with resources that could steer them away from making the same mistake again.
According to OSHP, in Ohio, about four out of 10 people arrested for impaired driving have a previous offense. Operation New Beginnings aims to get those people help before they hurt themselves, or someone else, on the roads.
