Russian volcano eruption sends ash over Alaska, flights canceled

Alaska is expecting a high-profile visitor from Russia later this week—but another visitor has already made its presence felt.

The Klyuchevskoy Volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula erupted Tuesday, sending ash drifting over the Bering Strait.

That prompted Alaska Airlines to cancel five flights across western Alaska, affecting travel to Nome, Utqiaġvik, and Kotzebue.
