HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - New protections are now in place for ocean life off part of Oahu’s south shore.

The state has officially designated the area stretching from Spitting Caves to the Diamond Head lighthouse as the Maunalua Bay Fisheries Management Area (FMA).

The designation comes with new regulations that prohibit nighttime dive spearfishing and limit the taking or possession of certain species, including alakuma, horned helmet, Triton’s trumpet, ula and ula papapa.

A stakeholder-led advisory panel will help ensure that rules, enforcement, and education remain effective.
