WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — As Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools considers deep cuts to jobs in its exceptional children's program among other positions.

The district said proposed cuts across multiple departments could save up to $25 million dollars as it works to balance the 2025-2026 budget, on top of a $46 million dollar budget deficit from the last school year, 2024-2025.

Winston-Salem Mom, Lydia Swortzel said she's already warned her job, that if these programs are cut, she'll have to figure out what to do with her 4-year-old son, Oliver.

She knew the district's budget troubles were serious but didn't think it would hit this close to home.

Oliver's been in WS/FCS' exceptional children's program since last fall. Lydia said he's been thriving.
