AKRON, Ohio — A Summit County grand jury declined to indict the officer who fatally shot a man at a gas station, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said on Wednesday.

Akron officer Michael Novak shot Michael Jones, 54, on Aug. 17, 2024. The case was presented to the grand jury by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

“I again wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Jones as they grieve his passing – I want to acknowledge that there are loved ones in our community grappling with a tragedy,” Malik said.

Malik said the Akron police officials will conduct an internal investigation to determine if any policies were violated.
