Cheese recalled from Wegmans in 10 states, including N.Y.

Cheese sold at a popular supermarket is being recalled in 10 states, including New York, due to a health issue.

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. is recalling its Wegmans Medium Camembert Soft Ripened Cheese and various products containing this cheese, because it has the potential to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
