DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) - ‘Meeting on a Stick’ at the Iowa State Fair provides a safe space for those in alcohol recovery, KCCI reports .

The meeting is held on the second floor of Jalapeno Pete’s every morning of the Fair, before gates open for the day.

“One of my home groups had a flier going around, and everyone thought it was a joke because it had, like, a corn dog,” a participant said. “And it said meeting on a stick. And I’m like, whoa, wait. I’ve been looking for that for years.”

The first ‘Meeting on a Stick’ was held more than 10 years ago.

“There was a gal who helped organize it who worked here at Jalapeno Pete’s. And when COVID happened, she ended up not coming back to work,” said Donny Burkhart. “I had to keep this thing alive so it would help me.”
