SAN FRANCISCO — It's Thursday at the 2025 U.S. Amateur, which means it's time for a marathon.
The Round of 32 kicks things off Thursday morning, and the 16 winners will turn right around and battle it out in the afternoon wave. When the day is complete, only eight will be left standing with a chance to win the Havemeyer Trophy.
In the Round of 64, John Daly II advanced after winning only one hole in his match, and Tim Wiedemeyer, 5 down after seven holes, won his match 2 and 1.

John Daly II wins again
Little John is into the Round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur. He beats Nate Smith 2 and 1 to advance into the Round of 16.
Top-two amateurs in the world go down
Jackson Koivun and Ben James are heading home. Koivun fell 3 and 2 to Max Herendeen, while James lost to Mason Howell on the 18th to lose 1 down.
Instead of the top-two players facing off in the Round of 16, it'll be Herendeen and Howell.
Cinderella run happening?
Jimmy Abdo has an incredible story. He plays at Division III Gustavas Adolphus College in Minnesota. He's ranked 4,292 in WAGR. He spent all summer in the transfer portal hoping for better playing opportunities, but none came so he pulled his name out.
Qualified for his first U.S. Amateur, then birdied three of his final six holes to make the playoff to get into match play. Beat Logan Reilly, the top-ranked recruit in 2025, in the first round before taking down Wolfgang Glawe in the second. The 61 seed is now in the Round of 16.
Medalist fights back
Preston Stout was 3 down thru 7, but the medalist fights back and dominates the back nine (again) to beat David Liechty, 2 and 1.
Chang first to advance
Paul Chang ends up winning his match, 6 and 5. He’s the first player to advance to the afternoon Round of 16.
Paul Chang has dominant front nine
Paul Chang likes playing in the U.S. Amateur. The grad student at Virginia made the Round of 32 in 2024 and also qualified for the championship in 2023, going to the quarterfinals. On Thursday, he got off to a blazing start against Tyler Weaver, leading 5 up at the turn.
Mid-Am making a run?
42-year-old Nate Smith has an early 1-up lead against John Daly II on Thursday morning, and he's got a great story.
Passionate fan base
Niall Shiels Donegan is from Scotland but lives in the Bay Area. And there are plenty of family and friends out this week following him, and their cheers are reverberating down the hills of Olympic Club early Thursday morning. He just tied his match with Christiaan Maas on the seventh.
Medalist down early
It has been a struggle for Preston Stout to begin. He doubled the first hole, missed par putts to win the second and third holes, then finds the rough on 5 and his second smacks of a tree trunk. David Liechty is 2 up.
Round of 32 underway
Medalist Preston Stout hit the opening tee shot at Olympic Club, and the Round of 32 is underway.
