In last week’s Dining Diary, Savannah Morning News reported on the petition circulating on change.org demanding the city of Savannah renew the lease for Olympia Café , the venerable Greek eatery that has occupied 5 E. River St. for more than 30 years. As of Wednesday morning, that petition had garnered almost 5,500 signatures.

When so much of Savannah and its surrounding communities has been (and continues to be) transformed by the influx of hotels, warehouses and manufacturing plants, longtime Savannahians long for the grit, the quirk, the dark beauty, the hyper-local that has made Georgia’s first city such an enchanting place to live.

As one Facebook poster asked, “Why must we rid ourselves of everything that helps define this city??!!”
